My father grew up in an apartment rented by my grandparents in the Sanayeh neighborhood of Beirut. The building made it through the Civil War and property speculation and was available for rent for short periods. I was able to spend a few nights there during my first trip in September 2019. Following the explosion at the Port of Beirut in August 2020, which damaged the building, it became inaccessible. My father’s apartment was on the third floor.
